Q: How do you remove and install the Rack And Pinion on Honda Prelude?
A: With the Accord, to replace the power steering system, start by lifting the power steering reservoir off its mount and detach the inlet hose and put instead tubing that helps channel the liquid to a drain. Start the engine and with the engine idling, make full lock to lock turning of the steering till there is no flow of the fluid before switching off the engine. Centre the front wheels, lock the steering column, and join the reservoir inlet hose last. Locate the negative terminal of the battery and loose the cable; then unbolt the joint cover screws, and withdraw the upper & lower steer joint bolts. Jack up the car and secure it on jack stands, dismantle the wheel and the suspension: loosen the Tie Rod End disconnect screws and the castle nuts. Now we remove the tie rod ends from the Steering Knuckles, Heated Oxygen Sensor (H02S) and the catalytic converter is removed also. For vehicles that are fitted with manual transaxles, unscrew the shift linkage; for those which are fitted with automatic transaxles, unscrew the shift cable cover, and disconnect the cable. I usually recommend the use of a flare nut wrench and remove hydraulic lines from the rack valve body, and then plug them to help minimize on contamination. Loosen the rack stiffener plate and steering rack mounting bolts; the Rack And Pinion can be pulled down to be extracted from the pinion shaft. For installation, one should fit new gaskets and self-locking nuts of the catalytic converter and then move the ends of the rack to the right and fit the pinion shaft grommet. Align the Rack And Pinion and bolt on the mounting bolts then tighten them to achieve a certain amount of torque. Position the rack ends on the bottom edge of the air bag, position the cable reel of the air bag on the central axis. If removed, reconnect the hydraulic lines add the torque to the hydraulic lines specified then reinstall the valve body shield and center beam. When equipped with automatic transaxles, reconnect the shift cable and followed by tightening the lock nut. Catalytic converter-the last significant item that must be fitted to the car features new gaskets; reconnect the H02S; the tie rods ends are installed. then tighten the ball joint castle nuts and the front wheels are reinstalled back on, then the car is lowered back to the ground and the negative cable of the battery is connected again. Add Honda power steering fluid into the reservoir, start the engine and rotate the steering in order to let the air escape from the power steering system. Last of all, make a check of leaks and also do the front wheel alignment.
