Q: What is the function and maintenance procedure of the Positive Crankcase Ventilation (PCV) system and PCV Valve on Honda Odyssey?
A: The Positive Crankcase Ventilation (PCV) system helps in minimizing emission of hydrocarbons since it possesses the function of blowing fresh air from the air intake duct to the crankcase hence mixing the crankcase blow-by gases with the fresh air before being drawn by intake manifold vacuum through PCV valve to the intake manifold. The main components are the PCV valve and two vacuum hoses, of which the fresh air inlet hose links the air intake duct to the front valve cover, to contain fresh air together with blow-by gases from the crankcase. This valve controls the amount of crank case emissions allowed under functions of intake manifold vacuum to control the quality of the idle. For models prior to 2004, the process includes the steps of the intake manifold cover removal and checking the condition of the PCV system hoses, existence of vacuum in the PCV valve, and condition of the crankcase ventilation hose. In case the crankcase ventilation hose is faulty, it can be removed by simply unplugging it from the intake manifold and the PCV valve and, in the same way, the PCV valve can be removed by first unplugging the hose and then unscrewing the valve while checking and replacing the grommet if necessary. Concerning the PCV valves for models after 2005, the process of servicing and the valve replacing involves the following steps: on models which have the engine top cover, this must be removed In addition, the electrical connector of the PCV valve must be disconnected In the event of valve replacement, the correct O-rings must also be fitted.
