PCV system is an acronym that stands for Positive Crankcase Ventilation. It reduces the emissions of hydrocarbons in the environment by drawing fresh air into the crankcase where it mixes with the blow-by gases. The PCV valve then pulls this mixture to the intake manifold. When these vapors flow, they are controlled by the PCV valve which helps maintain idle quality. Fresh air inlet hose in Acura and Honda models is used to draw fresh air into the crankcase from two places, that is, the air intake duct and valve cover. Check hoses for damage and inspect for vacuum at idle on PCV valve, as well as worn out PCV valve grommet when examining PCV system.

The PCV system reduces hydrocarbon emissions by scavenging crankcase vapors by circulating fresh air from the air intake duct into and through the crankcase, where it mixes with blow-by gases before being drawn by intake manifold vacuum through a PCV valve to the intake manifold.

Loosen the hose clamps at both ends of the fresh air inlet hose and the crankcase ventilation hose, disconnect them from the air intake duct and the intake manifold, unscrew the PCV valve, remove and discard the PCV valve washer, and install the new components. On V6 models, remove the PCV valve retaining bolt and remove the PCV valve, and remove and discard the old PCV valve O-rings. Be sure to use new O-rings and tighten the PCV valve securely.

The crankcase ventilation hose can be replaced by disconnecting it from the intake manifold and the PCV valve.

The mixture of fresh air and blow-by gases is drawn through the PCV valve to the intake manifold via intake manifold vacuum, effectively scavenging crankcase vapors.
