In Honda Accord and Prelude models, the Positive Crankcase Ventilation (PCV) valve plays an important role in protecting the environment by re-routing destructive engine gases into the combustion chamber for incineration. It is of utmost importance in running the engine well and should be done every 60,000 miles or five years on a 2.2L engine model of a 1996 automobile. Clean the valve located on top of intake manifold before removing it then check if there are any loose or deteriorated lines. To reinstall, spread some oil over the mounting grommet and push the valve into it, do not forget to reconnect the vacuum line.

You can check PCV lines for any leaks or restrictions. To see if the valve is working properly, warm up the engine first and squeeze the hose between the PCV valve and intake manifold. If it does not make a clicking noise, remove it and shake it. Replace it if it doesn't make any rattling or movement. In case of noise, examine grommet as well as hoses for air leaks or damaged parts which must be replaced. Check once more to ensure that the PCV valve operates correctly.
