Q: How to remove and install Ignition Lock Cylinder on Honda Prelude?
A: Models with a Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) that contain an air bag pose some risk when operating around air bag installation components such as impact sensors, air bag module, steering column and instrument panel and therefore necessitate the disabling of the SRS. It involves initial steps of electrical interference, that is, cutting off the supply of electricity to the air bag system and using a wrench to remove the car's negative terminal from the battery. Steering column is detached by way of withdrawing the Steering Wheel, the driver's side dash lower, and knee bolster and finally the steering column. Should the car have an automatic transaxle, set the gear selector to neutral and remove the selector cable. Secondly, if fitted, then disconnect the combination switches from the steering column, check the matchmark and disconnect the steering joint in the engine bay, also, take out the fasteners anchoring the steering column. Disconnect the wiring harness from lower dash cover, then pull the steering column housing down. While removing the shear bolt(s), centre punch the shear bolt(s) and then drill out the head(s) with a 3/16 inch (5mm) drill. Place the ignition key and turn the Turn the Ignition Switch to position it at 'I' then you press down the lock pin situated at the service hole of the clamp to try and unlock the lock assembly from the column. For installation, turn the ignition switch to the 'I' again while inserting the key then press the lock key downwards and fix the lock assembly to the column. Installing the lock body may require you to do this without the key to enable fitment to be carried out to perfection. Tighten the new shear bolts only with fingers, turn the key into new lock cylinder, and ensure appropriate performance of the switches. Close the shear bolt(s) by spinning the nuts until the heads are flush with the bolt-they should be accessible for removal only; adjust the steering column and fasten bolts. Connect the harness after to the ignition switch, put on the steering column covers, the dashboard panel, and knee bolster, then reconnect the negative terminal of battery and turn on the air bag by last.
