Honda Prelude Flywheel Parts Questions & Experts Answers
Q: What is the role of the flywheel with manual transaxles, and what are the common reasons for its replacement on Honda Prelude?
A: The flywheel in cars with manual transaxles is used as for the forward clutch engagement and as the surface of the ring gear of the starter pinion to rotate the engine crank. Some of the factors that may highly demand for its replacemment are as follows: worn ring gear teeth, excessive noise making during clutch engagement through the driveline, and severe wear, scoring, or even cracks on the clutch surface. In the automatic transaxles option, the torque converter is integrated within the flywheel that engages with a thin driveplate coupled to the crankshaft, which also comes with the starter pinion ring gear. A driveplate may crack and the teeth of the ring gear may break and are particularly true in situations where one engages the starter when the pinion is still spinning. When removing the transaxle, on manual transaxle models, the clutch assembly must first be disconnected from the flywheel, then directly support the flywheel and align its matchmarks with the rear flange of the crankshaft and then remove the bolts. For installation, clean the flywheel/flexplate attaching bolts and the rear crankshaft mounting flange, align the flywheel/flexplate with the match marks and tighten the mounting bolts in a crisscross fashion to the recorded values and then re fit the clutch assembly to those models that are fitted with manual transaxle.
