- Q: How to change the automatic transaxle fluid in the Honda Prelude?A:Honda recommends using Honda Premium Automatic Transmission Fluid (ATF) in their vehicles, with Dexron III as a temporary substitute. The first recommended fluid change is at 45,000 miles or 3 years, then every 30,000 miles or 2 years. Check the fluid level with the vehicle on level ground and the engine hot. If low, add the correct fluid. The transmission drain plug has a 3/5 inch hole. To drain the transaxle, drive the vehicle to warm up the fluid, raise the front of the vehicle, place a catch pan underneath, and remove the drain plug. Refill with Honda ATF or Dexron III, start the engine, move the gear selector through each position, and check the fluid level. The level should be in the HOT range.
