Q: How should the ring end gaps be checked before installing new piston rings on Honda Passport?
A: If the piston ring side clearance has been proved to be right, in most cases, before the new piston rings are fitted, the Ring end gaps will need to be checked. Position the piston /Connecting Rod assemblies and the new ring sets side by side so as to align the piston No .to that of the cylinder while doing the end gap measurement and while assembling the engine . Put the top ring into the first cylinder with the aid of the top of the piston, place the ring near the bottom of the cylinder and make sure that the ring lies flat on the cylinder wall. Slide the slip feeler gauges between the ends of the ring until one that is equal to the gap width is identified, the gauge should just run on the surfaces with a slight resistance. If this gap is too small the gap must be enlarged so that the ring ends do not gall with each other during operation of the engine, which is extremely detrimental; this is accomplished by gradually filing the ends of the rings outside and, after enlargement, deburring the ends. End gap is not a problem if it is greater than .040-inch be sure correct rings are used. Performing the method for each of the rings in the first cylinder and then the continuing cylinders, but preserving rings, Pistons, and cylinders corresponding. It is once the ring end gaps have been measured and adjusted that the rings are placed on the pistons of the engine, the first one being the oil control ring which is made of three parts. Insert the spacer/expander in the groove with its anti-rotation tang in the hole; next is the side rail, to be fitted without a piston ring installation tool to avoid damaging it. Then the upper side rail is to be fitted in this way and both ISO side rails must run easily in the groove. Third, place in the second ring with the label of '2T' upward through the piston ring installation tool in the right way. Last but not the least, position the top ring with the mark towards the top and make sure you do not interchange the top and middle rings and go on repeating the same for other pistons and rings.
