Honda Odyssey Starter Motor Parts Questions & Experts Answers
Q: How to remove and install a starter on the Honda Odyssey?
A: Detach the cable from the negative terminal of the battery. On 2004 and earlier models, unlatch the clamp for the transmission cooler hose. Before removing the starter, pry this clamp open with a small screwdriver and pull the ATF cooler hose out of the way - is the starter lower mounting bolt and set it aside. On 2005 and later models, remove the intake air duct. Also remove the wiring harness clamp from the starter. On 2008 and later models with VCM, remove the bracket from the starter and the dipstick. Clearly label, then disconnect the wires from the terminals on the starter motor solenoid. Also disconnect any clips that attach the wiring to the starter assembly. Remove the starter mounting bolts and detach the starter. Installation is the reverse of removal. Tighten the starter mounting bolts to the torque, then reconnect the cable to the negative terminal of the battery.
Q: How to check starter and starting circuit for the Honda Odyssey?
A: When troubleshooting starting circuit issues, don't immediately blame the starter. Check the Battery Cable clamps, battery cables, and battery condition. Inspect the starter solenoid wiring, starter mounting bolts, fuses 41 and 42, and the ignition switch circuit. Confirm the gear position switch and starter cut relay are functioning. If the starter doesn't engage, check for battery voltage at the solenoid's "S" terminal. If no voltage, check fuses No.41 and No. 42, and the starter cut relay. If voltage is present but the starter doesn't engage, bench test the starter. If the starter turns over slowly, monitor the voltage and current draw from the battery. If the starter receives voltage but doesn't activate, bench test the starter/solenoid assembly.
