Honda Prelude Oil Pressure Switch Parts Questions & Experts Answers
Q: How to remove and install Oil Pressure Switch on Honda Prelude?
A: Low oil pressure warning lamp comes on with the ignition switch set to 'ON' with no engine running and turns on each time the oil pressure falls below a safe operating level with the running engine. To test the system first confirm the operation of the oil pressure light on selecting the 'ON' position with the ignition, and if the bulb does not illuminate, search for broken/connector wires around the engine and oil pressure switch. If the connector is present ground it to the engine using a jumper wire and then pull the lamp again. If it lights, ensure the oil pressure switch is grounded well and if it blinks replace the oil pressure switch; if it does not light, there might be a burned lamp or disconnected socket in the cluster instrument. When the oil pressure light is on continually, the levels of the oil should be checked and added to it if low; if the engine was low on oil, make test on the light after the addition of oil. That is, if light remains on then at the switch side of the wire remove the wire and then check the short circuit in the wire; if light is off then replace the oil pressure switch. If the light remains on while the engine is running, shut the engine for that the engine will not be damaged. Causes for the light to remain on include pinched or grounded sensor wire, gas switch went bad, the oil filter might be restricted or leaking, internal engine mechanical clearance may be bad or the oil is contaminated, or the screen to the oil pump pick-up may be blocked. For removal and installation, find the position of the oil pressure switch, write down the anti-theft code and radio settings, remove the negative battery terminal, electrical harness of the switch. To do it, use a pressure switch socket or wrench to remove the switch, and then put on the liquid thread sealant on the new unit and tighten the electrical connection, following which connects the battery, enter the code, start the engine, let it warm up, and inspect it for signs of leakage and good functioning.
