Q: How to remove and install Alternator on Honda Prelude?
A: The voltage drop test is done with direction to measure the following, voltage drop across the alternator output wire from the alternator output terminal to the battery positive post; voltage drop from the ground terminal of the alternator. A voltmeter with a 0-18 volt DC scale is needed and depending on the object being tested, other points of high resistance can be found by switching the place of the leads. There should be proper charge on the battery and the battery must also be in good health before charging. After ''warming up the engine'', attach an engine tachometer, set the parking brake, and start the engine as other electric accessories are on. Advance the engine speed to 2,400 RPM and check the ground circuitry with the voltmeter probes connected to the battery terminal and the alternator output terminal with the voltage not to exceed 0.6 volts. For the positive circuitry, the leads should be connected to the negative terminal of the battery and the case of the alternator; the voltage should not be more than 0.3 volts. Also, measure the voltage between the alternator and the casing and between the alternator and the engine. When performing the output voltage test and the battery is charged, perform the voltage drop test first. To test for voltage turn the key to 'on', press the starter button until the motor is warmed up maintain the motor at 3000 RPM by using a VAT-40 or any other equivalent speed meter. If voltage is less than or equal to 15.1 volts, replace with alternator. To read charging current switch the tester to charging mode, set the ammeter to zero and then read voltage and amperage. If the amperage is less than the specified values, then, it is necessary to replace the alternator or voltage regulator. For removal and installation, record radio security code, unbolt battery cables, take off the power steering pump, disconnect wiring from the alternator, then, remove the alternator belt and the mounting bolt. Removal is basically the undoing of installation, where the alternator belt tension is checked and the radio security code is re-inputted. Apart from the regular procedures such as disconnecting the battery cables, removing the alternator belt and disconnecting the connectors when removing the alternator, there are some procedures that are specific to the engine type; these are tightening bolts to their respective torque values after fixing them.
