Honda Passport Differential Seal Parts Questions & Answers
Q: How to replace the Differential Seal on Honda Passport?
A: Raise the vehicle and place it securely on jackstands. Remove the driveshaft. Mark the relationship of the flange nut to the pinion shaft and, using an inch-pound torque wrench, measure the torque required to start the pinion flange turning; jot down this figure and save it for reassembly. Holding the flange with a suitable tool, remove the retaining nut. Remove the pinion flange, using a puller if necessary. Remove the old seal with a seal removal tool or a large screwdriver. Install a new seal with a seal installer tool or a big socket. Apply sealant to the splines of the pinion flange, then install it onto the pinion, aligning the marks made earlier. Apply a non-hardening thread locking compound to the threads of the pinion, then install and tighten the pinion flange retaining nut until the previously made matchmarks are in alignment. When the marks are aligned, the turning torque of the pinion flange should be the same as it was before disassembly; tighten the nut to obtain another five inch-pounds of turning torque. Finally, install the driveshaft and lower the vehicle.
