- Q: How do you remove and install the Water Pump on Honda Prelude?A: The original radio contains a coded antitheft circuit, so obtain the security code number before disconnecting the battery cables. Disconnect the negative battery cable, drain the cooling system into a suitable container, remove the accessory drive belts, the valve cover, and the upper Timing Belt cover. Set the timing at TDC/compression for the No.1 piston. Remove the crankshaft pulley and lower timing belt cover, then remove the timing belt and replace it if contaminated with oil or coolant or shows signs of wear or damage. If equipped with a Crankshaft Speed Fluctuation (CKF) sensor at the crankshaft sprocket, unbolt the sensor bracket, move the sensor, and cover it with a shop towel to protect it from coolant. Unbolt the water pump and remove it from the engine block. Clean the water pump and O-ring mating surfaces, install the water pump with a new O-ring, and coat only the bolt threads with liquid gasket, tightening them to 108 inch lbs. (12 Nm). Install the timing belt, ensure proper fit and adjustment, reinstall the CKF sensor if applicable, and tighten the bracket bolts to 108 inch lbs. (12 Nm). Reinstall the lower belt cover, crankshaft pulley, upper timing belt cover, valve cover, and accessory drive belts. Ensure the cooling system drain plug is closed, refill, and bleed the cooling system. Reconnect the negative battery cable, enter the radio security code, start the engine, let it reach normal operating temperature, and check for coolant leaks. For the 2.7L engine, disconnect the negative battery cable, drain the coolant, remove the timing belt covers, timing belt, and timing belt tensioner. Remove the nine water pump bolts and take note of their locations. Remove the water pump and O-ring, then remove the dowel pins. Clean the water pump mounting surface and O-ring groove, install dowel pins, install a new O-ring, and the water pump, being careful not to pinch the O-ring. Tighten the 6mm bolts to 108 inch lbs. (12 Nm) and the 8mm bolts to 16 ft. lbs. (22 Nm). Ensure the water pump turns freely, install the timing belt tensioner and the timing belt covers, refill and bleed air from the cooling system, reconnect the negative battery cable, and enter the radio security code. For the 3.0L engine, remove the timing belt, tensioner, and five water pump mounting bolts, then remove the pump and seal. Clean the seal groove and mating surfaces, install a new seal and water pump, tighten bolts to 104 inch lbs. (12 Nm), reinstall the timing belt tensioner and timing belt, refill the cooling system, start the engine, check for leaks, and top off the cooling system after cooling if necessary.
