Q: What is the purpose and functionality of the Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) and Air Bag on Honda Passport?
A: Contemplated vehicles are incorporated with a Supplemental Restraint System (SRS), usually called an Airbag, the aim of which is to prevent the seriousness of a head-on or frontal crash by minimizing the dangers posed to the driver and front seat passenger. This system has an airbag module installed in the center of the steering wheel, another one in the right side of the instrument panel and a sensing and diagnostic module in the central part of the car. This system has a housing that is attached on the steering wheel and has the inflator unit and the airbag and can inflate the bag almost immediately an electrical signal is received. A coil assembly located on the steering column sends this signal irrespective of the angular position of the steering wheel while the igniter turns this signal to heat so as to fire a small explosive charge to inflate the airbag. SRS has the instrument panel-mounted airbag situated above the glove compartment and is bigger than the airbag beneath the steering wheel ; it is provided with a steel reaction housing under a textured trim cover that separates upon inflation. The sensing and diagnostic module supplies current to the airbag system during a collision even in the case of a battery cutoff, and monitors the system each time the vehicle starts, as well as illuminating the 'AIR BAG' light when in proper working condition. If there is a fault in the operation, for instance, the light will be ON, blinking or produce a beeping sound thus calling for service. To suppress the system if near the steering wheel or airbag elements it is necessary to remove SRS Fuses or turn off the car battery, and then unscrew the yellow airbag connector located at the basic of a steering column. To enable the system, the mode selector of the Ignition Switch should be set to LOCK, the yellow airbag connector connected and the airbag fuses linked or battery joined.
