Honda Odyssey EGR Valve

In Honda odyssey cars the EGR Valve helps in controlling the back flow of the exhaust gases into the combustion chamber to decrease the NOx emissions. EGR valve works for recirculating a portion of exhaust gas to reduce combustion temperature and hence used in making petrol engines more efficient by accepting larger throttle positions and avoiding pumping losses. Honda Odyssey for many years has used various types of EGR Valves, using simple orifice jets, the newest adaptable valves depending on the engine situation such as the coolant temperature and the manifold vacuum. A backpressure transducer may also be incorporated into the modern EGR system so as to regulate the flow of exhaust gases according to the load on the engine. Even though they help the vehicle to achieve the required emissions levels, EGR Valves may become clogged with carbon in the long run, and thus, need service on the Honda Odyssey vehicles.

Honda Odyssey EGR Valve Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: What are the functions and replacement procedures of the EGR system and EGR Valve on Honda Odyssey?
A: Nitrogen oxides or NOx is a generic term that summarises the individual elements formed in combustion chambers due to incoming air oxygen/Nitrogen combining due to high combustion temperatures. When NOx is released in the atmosphere from the tailpipe it combines with reactive organic compounds, hydrocarbons, and sunlight to form a photometrically active ozone smog. The EGR system works by passing exhaust gases from the exhaust manifold through the EGR valve to the intake manifold then to the combustion chambers where they are allowed to mix with the air-fuel mixture, thus cooling the chambers and hence minimize on emission of NOx. The EGR system has the PCM, the EGR valve, the position sensor of the EGR valve and several sensors telling the PCM when to open the EGR valve. The EGR rate of flow is the amount of opening of the EGR valve measured as ''EGR valve lift'' and is adjusted by the PCM with reference to the working conditions. The position sensor measures the amount of lift of the EGR valve and sends this signal to the PCM which in turn varies the amount of current supplied to the valve in order to get the right lift. If the flow of EGR is not suitable for the conditions, the PCM brings current to zero to close the valve. Before the replacement of the EGR valve, switch off the ignition using the key and then unplug the connector of the EGR valve. Subsequently, unbolt the EGR valve and pull out the valve and get rid of the mounting nuts. Remove the old gasket and get rid of all the remains of the gasket on the mating surfaces without causing any harm to them. Last of all, place the fresh EGR valve gasket and turn the mounting nuts to the right until you hear a fast clicking sound.
