Honda Fit Intake Manifold Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How can the upper and lower intake manifolds be removed and reinstalled on Honda Fit?
A: The upper intake manifold can be disassembled together with the lower intake manifold if both of them would have to be removed. This procedure starts with the removal of cable from the terminal that is negative to the battery. For the vehicles manufactured before 2008, first, the 'engine cover' has to be 'removed' whereas for the vehicles manufactured in or after 2009, the 'cowl cover' has to be 'removed'. Thirdly, disconnect all vacuum lines and electrical connectors that may hinder the removal of the air filter housing and label them properly and then disconnect them. Remove the brake booster vacuum hose, and the MAP sensor connector and harness from the harness brackets. Take out the four bolts that join the throttle body to the upper intake manifold while having connectors and coolant hoses still connected to it, with the throttle body placed to the side. On the 2009 and later models, take out the intake manifold support bracket mounting bolts and tightening that are in front of the air intake and facing down and the tightening situated at the throttle body mounting place is facing inwards. Then detach the bolts or nuts that are used to join the upper intake manifold to the lower intake manifold and then, take off the upper intake manifold. Remove the brackets and clean the manifold mating surfaces with a suitable brake system cleaner and put new gaskets into the grooves in the mating surface of the upper intake manifold. Removal is the reverse of installation, then tightening the fasteners gradually outward of the middle to the recommended torque. Reconnect the battery afterward. As for the lower intake manifold, the upper and lower intakes, as well as the manifolds can be removed as a combination or as individual parts. As for the rest of the process it is similar to the first steps of the upper intake manifold removal, next, the owner has to take out the dipstick and disconnect the PCV hose from the lower one. Remove the bolt(s) hold the harness to the bottom of the Cylinder Nos.1 and 4 intake runners and slide the harness off the bracket to release the clip at the lower Intake manifold in front of the dipstick tube. All the nuts and bolts holding the intake manifold to the Cylinder Head have to be loosened and the manifold pulled out; the intake manifold gasket also has to be pulled off the cylinder head and washed clean. The mating surfaces of the manifold are check for flatness using a straight edge and feeler gages with attention being paid to cracks and distortion. If any problems will be detected, replace the manifold or take it to the automotive machine shop where it will be resurfaced. Make sure that there are no stripped or broken intake manifold bolts or studs, if this is the case the fasteners should be replaced with new ones. Scrape off all the vestiges of the former gasket from the cylinder head and manifold mating surfaces and fit the intake manifold with a new one bringing in the fasteners and mildly tightening them starting from the middle outwards to the recommended torque. Connect the battery terminal and then follow the above instructions in the backward process.
