Honda Del Sol Ignition Control Module

Honda Del Sol Ignition Control Module controls on and off of the coil primary current with the exact timing to provide quick starts, good pull, improved economy, and cleaner exhaust. Inside the distributor of early Del Sol models, the Ignition Control Module depends on a transistor that opens and closes the current using signals from a magnetic pickup or hall effect switch reading a spinning reluctor to replace fragile breaker points and allow higher secondary voltage. Mid-1990s updates to the Honda left some of the Del Sol cars with the distributorless layout, in which the Ignition Control Module cooperates with the crankshaft position sensor, allowing the engine computer to set both the base timing and advance, eliminating gear lash and vacuum hardware for even sharper accuracy. Both versions strive for the same combustion but use different means of controlling the trigger source and timing: the distributor units recognize shaft rotation plus centrifugal or vacuum advance while the distributorless units listen to electronic data streams. When an Ignition Control Module fails, voltage reaches the coil, yet a test light never flickers, and the Honda engine cranks without fire. A healthy Ignition Control Module is the key to reliable performance for any Honda Del Sol driver.

Honda Del Sol Ignition Control Module Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to check and replace the ignition control module (ICM) on Honda Del Sol?
    A:
Before testing this unit, disconnect the distributor cap alongside the ICM cover, and withdraw the wires from the ICM unit. To do this, turn the ignition ON (do not start the engine) and connect the voltmeter between black yellow small terminal of ICM unit and body ground; there must be battery voltage. If no voltage is found, check with a continuity tester the circuit between the black/yellow wire and the IGN switch. Then, enter into all BRN/BLK, and then measure voltage between white/blue wire and body ground there should be battery voltage. If missing, check the circuit between the wire related to the above and Ignition Coil. Also check the connection between the white/blue wire and the blue wire that is present with the offset terminal of the ICM it should of 1.1 to 3.3 K-ohms. If the ICM fails these checks, the ICM has to be replaced, and while installing the new ICM, sliding the connector into the housing, apply silicone grease. As to replacement, one begins with the removal of the negative battery terminal followed by distributor cap and cap cover, and then gets disconnecting all electrical connections of the ICM unit. Take out the two set screws at the ICM body and slide out the ICM unit along the axis of the rails. Removal is the process of 'un-installing,' and installation is the opposite of it.
