Honda Civic Rocker Arm Parts Questions & Experts Answers
Q: How do you properly disassemble and inspect the camshaft holders, camshafts, and rocker arm assembly on 2.4L engine on Honda Civic?
A: The camshaft holders, camshafts, and rocker arm assembly are fastened to the cylinder head as a unit and therefore have to be removed together The unit can be dismantled on the workbench after being removed. Start with the removal of the negative terminal of the battery, aligning the first piston number with reference to the TDC on the compression stroke of the first cylinder, withdrawal of the Valve Cover and timing chain. Turn all the rocker arm adjusting screws in an anticlockwise direction, remove the camshaft holder bolts according to the prescribed order, and then the upper timing chain guide. Raise the camshaft holders and the camshafts away from the rocker arm assembly, then remove the rocker arm assembly, also; be sure to put each bolt into the right camshaft holder in order to rebuild it in the correct manner. In the case that the intake camshaft sprocket is removed and intended to be reused, correct preservation to lock advance and retard holes using tape then use compressed air. Depending on the model, you may need to remove a few bolts to pull the rocker arm assembly apart to check for wear; lay out the individual parts in a logical order, so that you do not forget where they go during reassembly. After cleaning, ensure that all these components do not show signs of wear on them and if they do they are replaced. The camshaft endplay can be checked by installing the rocker shaft holders, camshafts, camshaft holders, engaging a dial indicator on the cylinder head and drawing back the camshaft to get the reading. For camshaft runout, place the camshaft between the V-blocks; install the dial indicator and turn the camshaft; compare the reading to the limit. Examine the camshaft bearing journals and the caps for signs of scoring and wear and replace them if worn out; on the cam lobes, there may be wearing, convering height with a micrometer. If any issues are found, then find out the reasons for less lubrication or grimy oil before getting new parts for replacement. For installation, apply engine assembly lubricant to every part prior to its installation, replacing the rockerarms back to the shafts and be certain that the side of the camshaft sprocket holding the timing marks upward before tightening the camshaft holder bolts following some sequence. The rest of the installation is the reverse of the removal process and after testing the engine, look for leakage and correct functioning.
