The Mass Air Flow Sensor (MAF) in Honda Civic vehicles is designed to meter the air that enters the engine to enable the engine control unit (ECU) set the rate of fuel injection to suit the engine combustion process. This sensor is effective in the regulation of engine power as it makes compensation for differences in density caused by air temperature and pressure; it is preferable to volumetric flow sensors. Through time, Honda Civics have used various kinds of Mass Air Flow Sensor, especially the Vane Meter or VAF and Hot Wire. Measurement of airflow is done using a spring loaded vane which is installed in the VAF sensor; however, it has problems of restricted airflow and mechanical deterioration. The Hot Wire sensor on the other hand has the ability to provide higher accuracy by the measurement of changes in the current passed through a heated wire which is exposed to the airflow but may be interfered by contaminants. Other types including the Hot Film and Karman vortex sensors are also available although they have different techniques of accurately measuring the airflow to the Honda Civics engine.
