    Q:
How to check Fuel Pump and test fuel pressure on carbureted engine on Honda Passport? Posted by Customer
    A:
One should also inspect the fuel pump and the lines and all the hoses from the tank to the pump especially the suction hoses at the fuel tank and the fuel pump, cracks seams may hamper feeding of the fuel to the fuel pump. Also, as a result of a damaged fuel pump diaphragm, fuel can be accumulated in the crankcase. Fuel odour when there are no external signs of fuel leaks may suggest fuel dilution with the engine oil; which should show a higher than normal level of oil with a thinner feel and a fuel smell. To measure fuel pressure turn off the fuel to the carburetor by removing the fuel line, then connect T fitting with fuel pressure gauge and short section of fuel hose. When the engine is running allow it to idle; the gauge should usually range between 2 to 8 psi, drop back to zero when the engine is shut down. If the engine does not start then it should be cranked for a while until a reading can be recorded. Sharp decrease in pressure indicates an outlet valve problem: therefore, a fuel pump needs to be changed. If it is too high then suspect blockage in the carburetor float bowl air vent before thinking of a pump change. On the other hand if the pressure is too low make sure the fuel hoses and lines are correct and not blocked before replacing the pump.
