Brake fluid will damage paint, so use care not to spill it on painted surfaces. Begin by removing the battery, then take out the brake fluid from the clutch master cylinder reservoir and place rags under the master cylinder to catch any spillage. Next, remove the driver's-side under-dash panel. For 2008 and earlier models, take out the air filter housing, squeeze the clamp to remove the reservoir hose from the master cylinder, and use needle-nosed pliers to pull out the clutch line retaining clip. Remove the clutch line fitting from the master cylinder and plug the end of the clutch line to prevent debris from entering. Working under the driver's side of the instrument panel, remove the spring clip and clevis pin to disconnect the clutch master cylinder pushrod from the pedal, then remove the two nuts retaining the clutch master cylinder to the firewall and take the cylinder out of the vehicle. For 2009 and later models, disconnect the pushrod from the pedal, remove the two nuts retaining the clutch master cylinder to the firewall, and take off the wiper blades and cowl cover. Remove the air filter housing assembly, detach the clutch line bracket, squeeze the clamp to remove the reservoir hose, and use a flare-nut wrench to remove the clutch line fitting while holding the connector with another wrench. Finally, remove the clutch master cylinder and, if necessary, use needle-nosed pliers to pull out the clutch line retaining clip and connector. For installation, ensure a new O-ring is used for the clutch line fitting on 2008 and earlier models, and replace the O-ring if the fitting connector was removed on 2009 and later models. Installation is the reverse of removal, applying grease to the brake pedal clevis pin, filling the clutch master cylinder reservoir with brake fluid conforming to DOT 3 specifications, and bleeding the clutch system. Lastly, check the interlock and pedal position switch adjustment.
