    Q:
How do you remove and reinstall the older and later style hubs on Honda Passport? Posted by Customer
    A:
To take off the older style hub you have to set the hub control lever to the 2H position and the free-wheeling hub to Free, then loosen the wheel lug nuts, lift the vehicle, and support it on jack stands and then take off the wheel. Remove the brake caliper and suspend it from wherever you consider convenient, also making a point of noting where the hub cap was so that it can be replaced later. Disconnect the six bolts that hold the cap in place and thereby lift it off and at the same time, mark the hub housing and also take it off. Free wheeling hubs are removed by removing the snap ring by using the snap ring pliers to remove the snap ring which retains the inner assembly in addition to using a screw driver and needle-nose pliers to remove a drive clutch assembly more shims have to be accounted for. Less the drive clutch assembly and inner cam, and you can take off the lock washer and screws. Place a punch on the nut of the hub, slightly pull the hub and push it again to remove the outer wheel bearing, pull the hub off the spindle. Pop out the grease seal and take out the inner wheel bearing. For bearing repack, always ensure that you clean all parts with solvent, carry out a check on the bearing to see whether they have been damaged or not and if not damaged pack them with high-temperature moly-based grease and ensure that the thin layer of grease is applied on the spindle. To install of course the inner bearing will be slided into the hub, more grease should be applied then the new seal will be hammered. Researchers want one to place the hub assembly carefully on the spindle, push the outer bearing on it a little and tighten the hub nut a little. Run the hub to place the bearings, get the preload reading with a spring scale and turn the hub nut accordingly. Bolt and corresponding washers must be placed and aligned, and the lock washer must then be fixed in position, using the retaining screws. Clean contact surfaces and install the inner cam, drive clutch assembly and snap-ring and finally replace the caliper, wheel and tighten the lug nuts when the vehicle is lowered to the required standard torque. In the later style, take time and twist the wheel lug nuts followed by lifting the car and detaching the wheel. Remove the brake caliper and the anchor bracket, delete the grease cover, the snap-ring, shim and the hub flange. Unlock and unbolt the lock screw together with the lock washer, then, unbolt the hub nut. Remove the outer bearing and the hub and disc assembly, and put them on a workbench to work on them. Pop the rear cover of the disc and the inner bearing assembly and clean all the parts in solvent and dry them. Check the bearings for signs of wear and replace both, check bearing race for damage and if beyond their repair take it to a machine shop. Cover the bearings with high temperature grease, and fit in the inner bearing and also new seal as well as reversing the removal process for installation process, make sure that all parts are cleaned and tighten the hub nut as well as the wheel lug nuts to the recommended torque.

    Q:
What is the procedure for servicing a Saginaw rear axle for the 2002 Honda Passport? Posted by Customer
    A:
For Saginaw rear axles, raise the rear of the vehicle, support it securely, and remove the wheel and brake drum. Unscrew the pressed steel cover from the differential housing to drain the lubricant, then remove the lock bolt from the differential pinion shaft and withdraw the pinion shaft. Push the outer end of the axleshaft in to remove the C-lock, then carefully withdraw the axleshaft, avoiding damage to the oil seal. Reinstallation follows the reverse order, with a new lock bolt and cover gasket, and refill the differential with the correct lubricant.
