    Q:
What should you consider before replacing the catalytic converter on Honda Fit? Posted by Customer
    A:
Because of the Federally-mandated extended warranty covering emission-related components such as the catalytic converter, it is advisable to check with a dealer service department before replacing the converter at your own expense. For 2007 and 2008 models, there is only one catalytic converter located under the vehicle. Begin by raising the vehicle and securely supporting it on jackstands, then spray a liberal amount of penetrating oil onto the threads of all fasteners to be removed. Remove the downstream oxygen sensor, unscrew the two bolts fastening the catalytic converter pipe to the exhaust manifold while retaining the springs, and unscrew the three nuts fastening the catalytic converter to the exhaust pipe. Remove the catalytic converter and discard the front and rear exhaust gaskets. If a new converter is being installed, transfer the heat shields to the new unit, and installation is the reverse of removal using new exhaust gaskets and self-locking nuts, applying anti-seize compound to the threads of the fasteners and tightening them to the specified torque. For 2009 and later models, there are two catalytic converters: the warm-up catalytic converter bolted to the exhaust manifold and the under-floor catalytic converter bolted to the warm-up converter. Raise the vehicle and support it securely on jackstands, then remove the under-floor converter-to-warm-up converter mounting bolts and the converter-to-mounting bracket bolt before lowering the vehicle. Remove the upstream oxygen sensor, the EGR pipe, and the converter heat shield, then unscrew the catalytic converter upper mounting bolts and remove the converter. Installation is the reverse of removal, using new gaskets and self-locking nuts, applying anti-seize compound to the threads of the fasteners and tightening them to the specified torque. For the under-floor catalytic converter, remove the downstream oxygen sensor, the under-floor catalytic converter-to-warm-up converter bolts, and the converter-to-exhaust pipe nuts, pushing the exhaust pipe to the rear to separate the converter from the pipes at each end. If a new converter is being installed, transfer the heat shield to the new unit, and installation is the reverse of removal, using new gaskets and self-locking nuts, applying anti-seize compound to the threads of the fasteners and tightening them to the specified torque.

    Q:
What is the recommended procedure when repairing the exhaust system for the 2009 Honda Fit? Posted by Customer
    A:
When repairing the exhaust system, work from the back to the front, apply penetrating oil to fasteners for easier removal, use new gaskets, hangers, and clamps, apply anti-seize compound to fastener threads during reassembly, and ensure sufficient clearance between newly installed parts and the underbody to prevent overheating and potential damage to the interior.
