    Q:
How do you remove and reinstall the timing chain cover and related components on Honda Fit? Posted by Customer
    A:
To remove the components, first disconnect the cable from the negative battery terminal, then loosen the right front wheel lug nuts. Raise the front of the vehicle and support it securely on jackstands before removing the right front wheel. Next, take off the splash shield from below the engine compartment and remove the drivebelt. Detach the alternator bracket-to-timing cover bolts, loosen the alternator pivot bolt, and swing the alternator and bracket towards the front of the car. For 2008 and earlier models, remove the mounting bolt and idler pulley from the cover; for 2009 and later models, remove the belt tensioner assembly. Remove the valve cover, water pump pulley, and crankshaft pulley, then drain the engine oil. For 2008 and earlier models, remove the oil pan and disconnect the crankshaft position sensor connector and harness clips from the timing cover. Support the engine with a floor jack, placing a wood block between the jack pad and the engine block to avoid damage. Detach the ground cable and remove the right-side engine mount and bracket assembly. Remove the timing cover bolts and detach the cover from the engine, taking care to mark the bolt locations for installation as they vary in size, design, and length. Be cautious as the cover may be stuck due to RTV sealant; pull it from the top down and use a hammer and wood block if necessary, avoiding prying between mating surfaces to prevent damage. For installation, inspect and clean all sealing surfaces of the timing cover, cylinder block, and oil pan, being careful not to gouge aluminum parts. If needed, replace the crankshaft oil seal in the timing cover and apply RTV sealant to the mating surfaces. If using Honda brand sealant, install the timing cover within four minutes of application, ensuring the oil pan mating surface is set against the oil pan first. Install the timing cover and fasteners, tightening them by hand until the cover contacts the block, then tighten the bolts. Reinstall the remaining parts in reverse order of removal, allowing 30 minutes for Honda sealant to cure before adding engine oil. Fill the crankcase with the recommended oil and reconnect the battery, waiting three hours before running the engine to allow the sealant to cure completely. Finally, start the engine and check for leaks and fluid levels.
