Honda Ridgeline Axle Shaft Parts Questions & Experts Answers
Q: How to remove and install a drive axle on Honda Ridgeline?
A: Set the parking brake. Remove the wheel cover or hubcap. If the axle shaft/hub nut is staked, unstake it with a center punch or chisel. Loosen the axle shaft/hub nut with a large socket and breaker bar, but don't remove it yet. Loosen the front wheel lug nuts, raise the vehicle, and support it securely on jackstands. Remove the wheel. If you're removing the left axle shaft, drain the transaxle lubricant. Remove the axle shaft/hub nut. Disconnect the upper end of the stabilizer bar link. Separate the control arm from the steering knuckle. To loosen the axle shaft from the hub splines, tap the end of the axle shaft with a hammer and brass punch. If the axle shaft is stuck, use a puller. Pull out on the steering knuckle and detach the axle shaft from the hub. Suspend the outer end of the axle shaft on a bungee cord or piece of wire. Check for lubricant leakage around the Differential Seal and replace if necessary. For the right axle shaft, tap the inboard joint off the intermediate shaft. For the left, use a prybar against the inner joint and pry the joint off the transaxle side gear. Remove the axle shaft assembly carefully. If moving the vehicle without the axle shaft, secure the hub with a bolt and washers.Installation: Remove the old set-ring from the inner CV joint or the intermediate shaft and install a new one. Apply a film of grease around the splines of the joints. Hold the axle shaft straight, push it in sharply, and test the fit by pulling it. Clean the axle shaft outer CV joint threads. Install a new axle shaft/hub nut, but not to full torque. Tighten the suspension fasteners. Install the wheel and lug nuts, then lower the vehicle. Stake the nut to the groove in the axle shaft. Tighten the wheel lug nuts. Refill the transaxle lubricant if necessary. REAR (AWD MODELS) Removal: Remove the wheel cover or hub cap. Unstake the nut with a punch or chisel. Break the hub nut loose with a socket and large breaker bar. Loosen the wheel lug nuts, raise the vehicle, and support it on jackstands. Remove the wheel. Drain the differential lubricant. Remove the pivot bolt securing the upper arm to the rear crossmember. Remove the rear shock absorber.
