Honda Passport Ignition Lock Cylinder

Within the Honda Passport automobiles, the role of the Ignition Lock Cylinder is mainly to make a turn of the key hence starting the engine. This component forms part of the ignition switch that directs electrical current to the required circuit when the right key is inserted. Through time, there have been changes in the models of Honda Passport that include the changing of the key-operated ignition system to the modern keyless ignition system to offer better convenience and security. While, the traditional ignition lock cylinder works with the help of a special key and tumblers, new models work with keyless remotes that have a dialogue with the car's computer. This shift not only makes the start up process easier but also this also eliminates many things that can go wrong. Despite all that, one can find that even older vehicles like Honda Passport may face the problem of the ignition lock cylinder wearing out, which leads to problems with proper usage or, in the worse-case scenario, starting the car at all, so this component must be maintained adequately.

Honda Passport Ignition Lock Cylinder Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How do you check and replace the ignition switch and lock cylinder on Honda Passport?
A: To check the ignition switch, trace the wiring from the ignition switch to the main wiring harness connector and disconnect it. Using an ohmmeter or self-powered test light along with the diagrams, check for continuity between the indicated switch terminals with the switch in each of the specified positions; if continuity is not as required, replace the switch. For replacement, first disconnect the cable from the negative terminal of the battery and ensure the ignition key is in the OFF position. Remove the steering wheel and the steering column cover, then take out the combination switch from the steering column. Unplug the ignition switch wiring harness connector and detach the switch retaining screw to remove the ignition switch assembly from the steering column. Installation is the reverse of removal. For the lock cylinder, use a small screwdriver or punch to depress the lock cylinder retaining pin, then pull straight out on the lock cylinder assembly to remove it from the vehicle. To install the lock cylinder, depress the retaining pin and guide it into the steering column housing until the retaining pin extends back into the locating hole. The remainder of the installation follows the reverse of removal.
