Honda Passport Drive Shaft Parts Questions & Experts Answers
Q: How do you remove and reinstall the front and rear driveshafts on Honda Passport?
A: To change the front driveshaft on 4WD models raise the front of the car and support it on jackstands and to orient the front driveshaft flange and the front differential companion flange and the direction the front driveshaft faces. Also note the orientation of the U-joint where it attaches to the driveshaft and at the other end. Subsequently, align the rear driveshaft flange to the transfer case companion flange and make the respective marks. Screw and tighten the lock to ensure that the drive shaft does not rotate, and then remove the four nuts and bolts which are used in the front flange, and those four nuts and bolts used in the rear flange should also be removed while supporting the transmission with a jack if needed. Pull the splined end to the rear until the rear end of the front portion of the driveshaft reaches the rear end of the other driveshaft then take the driveshaft out from the vehicle. In case of installation, there is a reverse process to be followed, however, verification of the position of marks must be done and the flange bolts must be tightened to the correct torque value. To get to the rear driveshaft, lift the rear of the car and provide it with support using jackstands; if in the model of your car there is such a thing as the center support bearing bracket attached to the frame, then remove its bolts. The relationships between the U-joint and the driveshaft and flanges should be marked out to allow for reassembly of the same. This has to be removed by the four nuts and bolts to detach the rear driveshaft from the rear axle or the transfer case. On the 2WD models only: Rest the driveshaft, take the yoke out of the trans extension housing and pull the yoke. In case of automatics and 4WD models, shift the driveshaft slightly to the side and U-joints are released and the whole set up is slid out in unison. Thread a plug in the transmission to illustrate how to cope with leakage of lubricant on the 2WD models. Reinstallation is done in the reverse order to the removal with especial attention to ensure that the flange marks meet and the center bearing support bolts are tightened while at the same time ensuring the bracket is perpendicular to the driveshaft.
