Q: How do you replace the shift cable on Honda Odyssey?
A: To replace the shift cable for 2004 and earlier models, you will have to first remove the steering column cover, the park brake should be engaged and the shift lever placed in Neutral. The locking nut can then be unscrewed from the cable adjuster then the grommet is turned a quarter turn clockwise and slid with the cable out of the bracket. Remove the wheels, place the car on jack stands, undo the cable guide and grommet, the rubber grommet and the shift cable will then be pulled out of the car. After that, unbolt the shift cable holder and cover and disconnect the shift cable and the control lever from the transaxle as well as install a new lock washer before repositioning the cable. For 2005 and later models, lift the front of the vehicle, disconnect the instrument panel center trim and lower panel, start the engine and shift the gear to Reverse, then, press down the lock tab of the cable end holder. To remove it, one has to use pliers to remove the shift cable from the holder, then turn the socket holder on the bracket, and finally remove the shift cable retainer along with the fire wall grommet that goes with it. Take out the mounting nuts at the cable end and come out the cable from the lever using a pulling mechanism to remove it from the vehicle. Installation is the opposite of removal, whereby one has to install a new lock at the end of the cable as well as greasing all moving parts. After making the installation, ensure that Reverse light is on and make any necessary settings. To change the position of the cable on models prior to 2004 and to adjust, shift to the Neutral position, remove the shift cable from the mount and push it till it stays and pull it back to make two-clicks. Slide a 15/64 inch diameter pin into the positioning hole on the shift lever bracket base, position the shift lever and then tap the positioning pin provided into the positioning hole of the shift lever. What is left is then to fit the shift cable into the mounting bracket, tighten the lock nut and finally examine the shift lever in all the four gears. In case of 2005 and later models, the similar procedure has to be followed in order to adjust the cable and check whether the Reverse light is operational and the indicator lights are functionable in all the positions before fixing the trim panels.
