To remove the airbag module, ensure the front wheels are straight and disconnect the negative battery cable, waiting at least three minutes before proceeding. Remove the access panel at the bottom of the steering wheel to access the airbag module connector, then unplug the airbag module and horn connectors. Open the access panels on each side of the steering wheel and remove the fasteners holding the airbag module in place. Carefully pull off the airbag module and set it aside safely. Disconnect the radio remote switch and cruise control switch connectors. For 2001 models, loosen the steering wheel retaining nut, or for 2002 and later models, loosen the retaining bolt until about 1/2-inch of threads are visible. Use a steering wheel puller to remove the steering wheel, ensuring the puller screw contacts the steering wheel bolt or shaft, and avoid threading the puller bolts more than five turns to prevent damage to the airbag clockspring. Do not turn the steering shaft while the wheel is removed, and mark the relationship between the steering wheel hub and the shaft. If necessary, remove the clockspring by taking off the steering column covers, unplugging the clockspring connector, and removing the screws. For installation, ensure the front wheels are straight and center the airbag clockspring with the arrow pointing up, adjusting if the shaft was turned. Align the index mark on the steering wheel hub with the shaft mark when installing the wheel, ensuring proper engagement of the clockspring and steering wheel components. Install a new steering wheel bolt/nut and tighten it to the specified torque, then reconnect the radio remote switch and cruise control switch connectors. Reattach the airbag module with new fasteners and tighten them, plug in the horn and airbag module connectors, and finally reconnect the negative battery cable.
