Engine damage can occur from a faulty water pump due to overheating. Two methods can check the pump's operation. If defective, replace the pump. Water pumps have weep holes; if the pump seal fails, coolant leaks from this hole. With the timing belt cover off, use a flashlight and mirror to check for leaks. If the pump shaft bearings fail, a howling sound may be heard. Shaft wear can be detected by rocking the water pump pulley with the engine off. Don't confuse drivebelt slippage, which causes a squealing sound, with water pump bearing failure.

First of all, you can disconnect the negative battery terminal and drain the cooling system. Remove drivebelts, timing belt, and accessory brackets from the water pump. Detach the water pump from the engine, and clean bolt threads and engine holes. Compare new and old pumps. Clean engine and new pump surfaces with thinner or acetone. Apply RTV sealant to the new pump's O-ring groove and set a new O-ring. Attach the pump to the engine, thread bolts finger tight, and tighten to torque. Reinstall removed parts, refill and bleed the cooling system, and check for leaks.

When draining the same, do so remembering that cats and dogs are particularly drawn to ethylene glycol antifreeze which is fatal to them when consumed in large quantities. Never leave coolant to drain on the ground and if possible, the coolant should always be transferred into a sealable container and used again, provided it is not dirty or very old. Start by removing the negative terminal of the battery, and after, position a suitable drain pan where the car will be positioned to catch the fluid that will drain from the cooling system and proper disposal of the coolant used. Then, the accessory drive belts should be disconnected and finally the timing belt cover and timing belt also. Subsequently, undo the water pump mounting bolts and the water pump. During the installation, use another new O-ring seal in order to fix the water pump on the block tightening the mounting bolts to 9 ft. lbs. (12 Nm). Last but not the least replace the timing belt and the timing belt cover, replace the accessory drive belts, connect the negative terminal of the battery, refill the cooling system and bleed.
