Two-piece driveshafts with a center bearing feature three U-joints: one at the extension housing companion flange, one behind the center bearing, and one at the differential pinion flange.

Disconnect the driveshaft from the rear axle and hang it with a piece of wire from the underbody.

Begin by removing the driveaxle from the vehicle and securing it in a vise with protective lining to prevent damage.

For Dana rear axles, begin by loosening the rear wheel lug nuts, raising the vehicle, and securing it on jackstands. Remove the rear drum brake shoes or caliper and disc, disconnect the parking brake cable, and detach the axleshaft bearing retainer by removing four nuts. Use a slide hammer and puller attachment to remove the axleshaft, followed by the brake backing plate. Take the axleshaft and bearing retainer assembly to an automotive machine shop for replacement of the collar, bearing, and seal, then reinstall in reverse order, ensuring proper torque on the bearing retainer and wheel lug nuts.

With the axle mounting brackets detached from the frame and the axle assembly detached from the brackets, disengage the splined inner end of the left driveaxle from the axle assembly, carefully lower the axle assembly slightly, disengage it from the inner end of the right driveaxle assembly, and remove the axle.
