For Saginaw rear axles, raise the rear of the vehicle, support it securely, and remove the wheel and brake drum. Unscrew the pressed steel cover from the differential housing to drain the lubricant, then remove the lock bolt from the differential pinion shaft and withdraw the pinion shaft. Push the outer end of the axleshaft in to remove the C-lock, then carefully withdraw the axleshaft, avoiding damage to the oil seal. Reinstallation follows the reverse order, with a new lock bolt and cover gasket, and refill the differential with the correct lubricant.

Return the driveaxle assembly to the automotive machine shop to have the axle mounting bracket and new seal installed, along with pressing on the bearing, ensuring a new seal is used even if the old bearing is being reused.

Remove the four nuts attaching the axle mounting brackets to the frame and the eight bolts attaching the brackets to the ends of the axle assembly.

Installation is the reverse of removal, ensuring to tighten all fasteners to the specified torque and the wheel lug nuts as well.

The differential at the center of the rear axle transfers the driveshaft's turning force to the rear axleshafts, which are splined to fit into the differential gears, while outer support is provided by rear wheel bearings pressed onto the axle shafts.

If the CV joints show signs of wear, typically due to torn boots, consider all options before starting the overhaul, as complete rebuilt driveaxles are available on an exchange basis, saving time and effort.
