    ECM uses the Oxygen (O2) sensor to check for oxygen levels in the exhaust system and adjust the air fuel ratio for optimal engine efficiency. They help to improve response time as well as stability of the Heated Oxygen (HO2) Sensors. OBD-II has been requiring two HO2 sensors since 1996: a Primary Heated Oxygen (PHO2) sensor, which checks gases coming out of exhaust manifolds before catalyst converters; then a Secondary one called Heated Oxygen (SHO2) that controls PHO2 sensors and catalytic converter efficiencies. The ECM/PCM talks to the HO2 sensor, adjusting air/fuel mixtures to cope with lean or rich signals. Removals and installations must be handled carefully so as not to damage these sensors.
