    Q:
What is the Manifold Absolute Pressure (MAP) Sensor on Honda Passport? Posted by Customer
    A:
The Manifold Absolute Pressure (MAP) sensor, located on the right side of the intake manifold on 1997 and earlier 3.2L V6 engines and at the right rear upper corner of the Intake manifold on 1998 and later 3.2L models, monitors the intake manifold pressure changes resulting from changes in engine load and speed and converts the information into a voltage output. The PCM uses the MAP sensor to control fuel delivery and ignition timing. A failure in the MAP sensor circuit should set a trouble code. The MAP sensor SIGNAL voltage to the PCM varies from below 2 volts at idle (high vacuum) to above 4 volts with the ignition key ON (engine not running) or wide open throttle (WOT) (low vacuum). These values correspond with the altitude and pressure changes the vehicle experiences while driving. To check the MAP sensor, locate the MAP sensor connector by tracing the wires from the sensor back to the connector. Using a digital voltmeter and a pair of leads equipped with probes, check the reference voltage from the PCM to the MAP sensor. Unplug the sensor, turn the ignition key to ON and probe the terminals for the reference and the ground wires. The voltage should be approximately 5.0 volts. Turn off the ignition, plug in the MAP sensor connector and, using the voltmeter with a pair of leads suitable for back-probing the connector, check the signal voltage. With the ignition key turned to ON (engine not running), the voltage reading should be about 4.5 to 5 volts. Be careful when back-probing the electrical connector. Do not damage the wiring harness or pull on any connectors to make clean contact. If your voltmeter leads don't have probes small enough in diameter to back-probe the connector, use T-head pins, straight-pins, or straighten out a pair of paper clips, insert them into the backside of the connector and grasp them with alligator clips on the ends of the leads. Remove the vacuum line from the MAP sensor and install a hand-held vacuum pump onto the MAP sensor port, apply vacuum and observe that the vacuum decreases. As vacuum increases voltage decreases. To replace the MAP sensor, disconnect the vacuum hose, disconnect the electrical connector from the MAP sensor, remove the MAP sensor mounting screws (3.2L engine) or unclip the sensor from its mounting bracket (2.2L engine). Installation is the reverse of removal.
