Before replacing the fuel pump, for instance, you have to siphon all the fuel that is left in the tank without using your mouth, and you also have to relieve the fuel pressure. Remove the negative terminal of the battery and drop the fuel tank to have access to the fuel pump as well as its contacts. Remove the electrical connectors as well as the fuel line and return line. For the model prepared between 1989 and 1997, unscrew the fuel pump cover screws; for the models prepared from 1998 up to the present, unscrew the pump in an anti-clockwise direction using a special tool or a brass disk with a plastic head hammer on it. Particular care should be taken in order to prevent any sparks. For disassembly of 1997 and earlier models, remove the fuel pump assembly from the tank and unthread the fuel line to demount the filter sock by removing the mounting bolt and the retaining clip. For 1998 and later models with a locking tang type, first unthread the Fuel Level Sensor from the assembly, then take off the electrical connector and unscrew the retaining clip. For snap-ring type models: remove the assembly from the tank, and then replace or check the O-ring and the strainer, and finally, disconnect the fuel line and the Fuel Level Sensor connector. Reassembly proceeds in reverse chronological order to the disassembly; in the process, it is important to replace any gaskets as necessary.

Completely fill the tank with fuel.
