    Q:
Can broken valve springs and defective valve stem seals be replaced without removing the cylinder head on Honda Passport? Posted by Customer
    A:
Worn out valve springs as well as deteriorated valve stem seals can usually be repaired without the need to strip the cylinder head; it is done using two special tools and compressed air supply. One should start by lifting the valve cover while the timing belt is being detached and the rocker arm assembly and camshaft also being withdrawn. Take the spark plug out of the cylinder, if the particular component is defected and if all the valve stem seals are being replaced then pull all sparks plugs. Position the crankshaft so that the piston in the damaged cylinder will be positioned at TDC on the compression stroke but with no risks of valves' contact with pistons. In case of replacing all valve stem seals start from cylinder no one then follow the firing order sequence of the engine i.e. 1-3-4-2. Put an adapter through the spark plug hole and attach an air hose to it coming from a can of compressed air. Use compressed air to close the valves on the cylinder-if you have leakage two faces or seats of valves are usually worn. Cover the ends of the cylinder head holes with shop rags so that parts do not fall into the engine; to remove the keepers of the valve springs, compress the spring with a spring compressor and then take out the keepers with the help of a small needle-nose pliers or a magnet. Take off the valve with its spring retainer, valve springs and the umbrella type guide seal. If air pressure does not seal the valve, the valves face or seat can be damaged and this requires the removal of the cylinder head to cover the problem. Take a piece of rubber band or tape and put it around the top of the valve stem and you should now release pressure. Look at the condition of the valve stem the outer surface for any sign of bending since this would cause the valve to move in a circular motion. Check that the valve slides smoothly along the guide; if it does not, it may be that the valve is bent or the guide sorely worn; in either case the head has to be taken off. Resume air pressure to keep the valve closed, then the tape or rubber band used. Dip the stem of the valve with engine oil and also fit a new valve guide oil seal. Check the free height of the valve spring and replace the valve spring, if free height is more than specified; always make the narrow pitch end of the outer spring in contact with the cylinder head. Place the valve spring retainer and compress the valve spring while positioning the keepers in the groove, and in a bid to secure the keepers if they are Hardy, apply a small quantity of grease. Take the pressure off the spring tool and make sure the keepers are in place. Remove the air hose and take out the adapter from the spark plug hole before fitting the rocker arm into its place together with the spark plug with the wire and the cover of the valve. Select the parking brake and start, then run, the engine, looking for any oil leaks and any odd noises coming from the valve cover gasket.

    Q:
What is the challenge associated the 2001 Honda Passport regarding valve spring or seal replacement? Posted by Customer
    A:
For DOHC models, the design of the cylinder head makes it impractical to replace the valve springs or seals while the cylinder head is installed on the engine.
