The rear crankshaft seal can be replaced without removing the oil pan or crankshaft. Begin by removing the transmission. If a manual transmission is present, take out the pressure plate and clutch disc. Next, remove the flywheel or driveplate. Using a seal removal tool or a screwdriver, carefully pry the seal out of the block, ensuring not to scratch or nick the crankshaft. Clean the bore in the block and the seal contact surface on the crankshaft, checking for any scratches or nicks that could damage the new seal lip and cause oil leaks; if the crankshaft is damaged, a new or different crankshaft is necessary. Apply a light coat of engine oil or multipurpose grease to the outer edge of the new seal and lubricate the seal lip with moly-base grease. Ensure the seal lip faces toward the front of the engine, then carefully work the seal lip over the end of the crankshaft and tap it in with a hammer and punch until it is seated squarely in the bore, to the same depth as the original seal. Reinstall the flywheel or driveplate, and if a manual transmission is present, reinstall the clutch disc and pressure plate before reinstalling the transmission.

The first step is to disconnect the negative battery cable from the battery.

Carefully pry the crankshaft front oil seal out of the oil pump housing using a seal removal tool or screwdriver. Alternatively, you can drill small holes in the seal, screw in self-tapping screws, and use pliers to pry it out, ensuring not to scratch the seal bore or damage the crankshaft.

The seal area of the crankshaft should be lubricated with engine oil.
