Q:
How should the end gaps of piston rings be checked and corrected before installation on Honda Del Sol? Posted by Customer
A:
Leverage assumes the piston ring side clearance has been set right before it is possible to install new piston rings, the end gaps must be checked. Align the piston/connecting rod assemblies and the new ring sets so that it is easy to match the piston number with the cylinder number during the engine assembly, end gap measurement inclusive. Place the first cylinder on the block and screw in the top ring with the aid of the top of the piston, putting the ring preferably at the bottom of the cylinder. To determine the end gap, place slip feeler gauges between the two ends of ring until reach the nearest feeler gauge, for this feeler gauge to move between the ring ends with some resistance. If the gap is more or less than the specified gap then it should be checked that correct rings are being used or not. If the gap is too small, then it has to be made larger so as not to cause the ends of the rings to touch during the running cycle of the engine; this can be achieved through a process called 'filing'. Too much of end gap is not much of an issue until the value goes beyond 0.040-inch, check for the right rings for the engine. Follow the same process for the other rings of the first cylinder and the subsequent cylinders maintaining the corresponding rings, pistons and cylinders pairs. Subsequent to ensuring that the gaps of the ring ends are genuine and aligned, place the rings on the piston beginning with the Oil Control Ring which is made out of three members. Place spacer/expander in the groove; rotate it, so that if it has anti-rotation tang, it fits the drilled hole in the ring groove; then, place lower side rail; engaging pistons rings with tools may cause damage. Insert one end of the side rail in the groove and glide a finger around the piston while putting the side rail in the groove, and do the same to the upper side rail. After installation of all the three oil ring components, turn side rails upper and lower side rails and confirm that it can turn on the ring groove. The next step is the middle ring placed in the same manner, the strip with the stamped mark being located towards the upper part of the piston; the further operation is carried out in compliance with the instructions on the package with rings, since manufacturers can have their own specificities. For a particular piston, make sure that the identification mark faces upwards then; insert the ring to the middle positioned groove without ballooning the ring beyond what is needed. Lastly place the top ring in a similar fashion and should ensure that the mark facing upwards and be weary that the top and middle rings should not be interchanged, do the same for the other pistons and rings.
