This procedure applies only to 2004 and earlier models. The fuel pressure regulator on later models is part of the fuel pump module. Relieve the system fuel pressure. Disconnect the cable from the negative battery terminal. On 2001 models, remove the intake manifold cover. (You can access the fuel pressure regulator without removing the cover on 2002 and later models.) On 2001 models, remove the intake manifold. (The fuel pressure regulator is accessible on 2002 and later models without removing the intake manifold.) Disconnect the vacuum hose from the fuel pressure regulator. Squeeze the clamp on the fuel return hose and slide it back, then detach the hose from the regulator. Be prepared for some fuel spillage. On 2001 models, remove the fuel pressure regulator from the fuel rail. On 2002 and later models, remove the regulator from the junction block. Always use a new 0-ring when installing the pressure regulator. If reusing the old regulator, discard the old 0-ring, install a new one, and coat it with clean engine oil. Ensure the 0-ring isn't damaged during installation, as it might leak under operational fuel pressure. For installation, hand-tighten the regulator, then adjust its orientation. On 2001 models, the fuel return pipe should face downwards with the vacuum pipe pointing at a 45-degree angle towards the firewall. On 2002 and later models, the vacuum hose pipe should face straight back. Installation should be the reverse of the removal steps, ensuring the regulator locknut is tightened. After completion, reconnect the negative battery terminal, start the engine, and check for fuel leaks around the regulator.
