To perform an operating check, depress the brake pedal several times with the engine off to ensure there is no change in the pedal reserve distance. Then, start the engine and depress the pedal; a slight drop indicates normal operation. For the air tightness check, start the engine and turn it off after one or two minutes, then slowly depress the brake pedal several times. If the pedal goes down further the first time but gradually rises after subsequent depressions, the booster is airtight. While the engine is running, depress the brake pedal and stop the engine with the pedal held down; if there is no change in pedal reserve travel after 30 seconds, the booster is airtight. Disassembly of the power unit requires special tools and is typically not performed by home mechanics; if issues arise, installing a new or factory rebuilt unit is recommended. Remove the master cylinder, disconnect the vacuum hose from the power brake booster, and in the passenger compartment, remove the retaining pin to disconnect the pushrod from the brake pedal. Remove the nuts attaching the booster to the firewall, then carefully lift the booster unit away from the firewall and out of the engine compartment. To install the booster, position it and tighten the retaining nuts, then connect the pushrod to the brake pedal. Install the master cylinder, reconnect the vacuum hose, and bleed the brakes. Finally, carefully test the operation of the brakes before placing the vehicle in normal service.
