Both the Accord and the Prelude employ front axle shafts that transmit power from the transaxle to the road wheels as steering, suspension and wheel rotational motion occurs. This is done through the reference of an axle shaft fitted with inner and outer Constant Velocity (CV) joints which both pivot and rotate. The CV-joint has molybdenum disulfide high temperature grease, and a tapered boot that helps to cover and protect the joint from the environment. During inspection, outer CV-joint or boot failures are more exposed and the lubricant may degrade within five years or 1000 miles in severe conditions. Diagnosis of CV-joint failure includes performing road tests whilst you listen for clicking sounds, inspecting for signs of leakage or damage and finally applying force in a bid to identify joint looseness. Some of procedures that relate to axle shaft removal and installation are depicted below: loosening of the spindle nut; draining of the transaxle fluid as considered necessary; and detaching of coupler, flange, yoke, shift lever, breather, counter shaft, accessible bolt and nut. When rebuilding CV-joints, right clamps as well as lubricants should be used, and all parts should be properly marked for reassembly. It involves replacing CV-boots, washing and packing joints, also; Reinstallation involves correct alignment as well as sealing of joints. Don't re-use set rings and always tighten the axle nut to the recommended torque for the integrity to be maintained.

Inspect the rear wheel or axle assembly for bends and replace any defective components. Also, check the rear wheel bearing for looseness or damage and replace it as necessary.
