Park the vehicle with the wheels pointing straight ahead and disconnect the cable from the negative terminal of the battery. Adjust the steering wheel so that it's tilted to its uppermost position and fully extended telescopically. Remove the steering wheel, but be cautious not to rotate the steering shaft or clockspring, and do not change the angle of the front wheels without the steering wheel installed. If either of these things occur, the steering wheel could be installed incorrectly resulting in damage to the airbag clockspring. Remove the steering column covers and the combination switch assembly, making sure to disconnect the electrical connectors to the assembly. From inside the vehicle under the dashboard, remove the steering universal joint cover by pulling up on the cover's edges near the fasteners. Mark the relationship of both parts of the slider shaft to each other and the relationship of the universal joint and the steering input shaft. Remove the pinch bolt from the universal joint and then separate it from the input shaft. The slider shaft will separate if it is not held together. Remove the steering column mounting fasteners, lower the column and pull it to the rear, making sure nothing is still connected, then remove the column. Guide the steering column into position, then install the steering column mounting fasteners and tighten them. Connect the steering universal joint to the input shaft from the steering gear. Install the pinch bolt making certain that it fits in the groove in the input shaft and then tighten it. The remainder of installation is the reverse of removal. Reconnect the negative battery cable.
