    Q:
How can the extent of cam lobe wear be determined and what are the steps for camshaft removal and installation on 3.1L V6 engine on Honda Passport? Posted by Customer
    A:
Before the camshaft can be replaced, one needs to know how worn out the cam lobe is, this is by checking the lobe lift, and the process starts with the stripping off of the valve covers. Place the number one piston at the top of the compression stroke, at the top dead center position. Clamp a dial indicator on the engine and align the plunger of the first rocker arm against the top surface of the pushrod. Rotate the crankshaft back to zero the dial indicator and turn the crankshaft in the normal direction of rotation slowly until the needle of the dial indicator starts to go in the other direction; the position at which it starts to go in the other direction shows the maximum cam lobe lift. Note this figure for later use and align the piston to TDC of the compression stroke. Transfer the dial indicator to the other remaining number one cylinder rocker arm and do the check again and record for each valve. Repeat this kind of procedure for the other valves until all pistons are on the top center of the cylinder on the compression stroke and in compliance with the firing order sequence. When the checks have been done, this should be followed by a comparison with the specifications; if the camshaft lobe lift is below specified levels, this means that cam lobe wear has taken place and this requires that a new camshaft be fitted. For removal there will be necessity of separation of the cable from the negative terminal of battery and then drain the oil. Take out the radiator and if fitted the condenser. Remove valve lifters, timing chain cover, timing chain, camshaft sprocket. Turn the crankshaft to position one of the lobes of the camshaft under the forward bearing journals, then remove two long bolts that are on the end of the camshaft to be used as handle supports in pulling the camshaft out of the block carefully so as not to destroy the bearings. Always smear the lobes and journals of the new camshaft with camshaft installation lube before fitting it into the engine block, this is so as to avoid the bearing being damaged. Replace the camshaft sprocket and the timing chain into its place and fit all the other components in the order of their removal. Lastly, set the tappets clearances and if the car used air conditioning, get it, depressed and refilled.
