Q:
What steps should be followed when overhauling brake calipers on Honda Passport? Posted by Customer
A:
If an overhaul is indicated, often because of fluid leakage, there is more that can be done before starting the work. Perhaps surprisingly, one's task here is made a good deal easier by the fact that new and factory rebuilt calipers can of course be purchased on an exchange basis only. If rebuilding the calipers, make sure that a rebuild kit is available before hand and always rebuild the calipers in pair. What is important with various procedures is that they can be used on both front and rear calipers. The first process that needs to be performed is the unscrewing of the cap for the brake fluid reservoir and then siphoning of two-thirds of the fluid into a disposal bin. Turn the wheel lug nuts slightly, lift the front part of the car, and place the car on jack stands taking off the wheels. Loosen the bolts at the end of the brake hose and then pull the hose apart from the caliper, it is advisable to have a small towel to hold the brake fluid dripping from the hose and tighten a plastic bag over the hose to minimize the loss as well as contamination of the brake fluid. If the caliper is being removed just to gain access to other parts do not disconnect the hose. Remove the caliper to clean the outside using Brady brake system cleaner or denatured alcohol, but do not use gasoline or petroleum product and put the caliper on a clean bench. Place a wooden block or shop rags between the caliper and the frame and blow slightly to remove the piston without forcing excessively so as to damage the piston. Slide the piston out, piston dust boot retainer ring and dustboot off and the latter is a discard since it needs to be replaced. With a wooden or plastic tool pry out the piston seal from the caliper bore and dispose it. Clean all supplementary elements with brake cleaner or clean brake fluid, blow them with compressed air and check them for wear or damage; if found, then the caliper assembly must be replaced. New piston seal should be lubricated with brake lube or fluid before it is placed in the groove and the bore lubricated. Place the new dust boot to the piston, oil the piston and try to place it in the caliper through finger pressing only. Put the dust seal into the caliper and install the dust boot retainer ring. For installation, secure the caliper and torque the caliper pins to factory recommend value. Fit the brake hose-to-caliper banjo bolt and fasten the stud; the hose ought not to impede any of the parts in its vicinity. Refit the wheel and the lug nuts, out the brake system, then lower the car and finally torque the lug nuts to the recommended value. Drive gently before full exercise for sometime before the brakes are likely to be tested.
