While disconnecting them, make sure the black cable is disconnected from the terminal and is connected last to avoid short circuiting of the battery with the tool that is used for the removal of the clamps on the cable; even if the replacement of the cable for the positive terminal is being done, the first thing to do is disconnect the black cable. Remove the old cables from the battery, identify each of them to its corresponding terminal at the other end, and remove each of them recording the routing of each cable in the new arrangement. I recommend that the threads of the solenoid or ground connection be cleaned with a wire brush to remove rust and corrosion and a light coat of battery terminal corrosion inhibitor or petroleum jelly on threads. Screw the other end of the cable to the solenoid or the ground terminal and tighten the screw of the nut or bolt at the end. For a new cable that is being connected to the battery, make sure that the cable reaches the post of the battery without straining then connect the positive terminal of the battery to the cable that is positive at end then the grounding cable to the negative terminal of the battery.
