Found at the leading end of the crankshaft the pilot bearing takes the forward thrust from the end of the transaxle input shaft which means any time the transaxle is removed, the pilot bearing should be inspected for wear. Lubrication is performed by this bearing and to get to it, access is possible through the middle of the flywheel; it should be given a slight twist with a finger in order to detect any symptoms of roughness or play or even wear. Due to the press-fit of the bearing onto the crankshaft, it will be required to remove the bearing with the aid of a slide hammer and puller. It should not be greased heavily and then recommended that it should be tapped into the bore till the shoulder inside the crankshaft using a bearing driver or a socket which is slightly narrow to the outer race of the new bearing. However, after replacing the bearing, the transaxle could be refitted back again to the vehicle.
