All models are equipped with a Supplemental Restraint System (SAS), commonly known as an airbag, with 1994 and later models featuring two airbags for the driver and front seat passenger, designed to protect occupants from serious injury during head-on collisions. The SAS system in 1992 and 1993 models includes an SAS unit, two dash-mounted impact sensors, and an airbag assembly in the steering wheel, while 1994 and later models have a more advanced SAS unit with an impact sensor, seating sensor, self-diagnosis circuit, and back-up power circuit, along with an additional airbag assembly for the passenger located above the glove box. For deployment, both impact and seating sensors must be activated, closing the circuit to the airbag inflater; if the battery fails, a back-up power unit provides necessary power. A self-diagnosis circuit in the SAS unit activates a light when the ignition is turned on, which should extinguish after six seconds if functioning properly; any malfunction requires immediate inspection and repair. When servicing components near the SAS system, bright yellow wires indicate SAS connections, which should not be unplugged or tested with electrical equipment, and the SRS system must be disabled beforehand by disconnecting the battery cables and waiting three minutes. To disable the driver's side airbag, the access panel must be removed to access the short connector, while for the passenger side, the glove box needs to be removed to unplug the airbag electrical connector and install the red short connector. After servicing, the short connector should be removed, and the original connectors reattached before reinstalling any panels and reconnecting the battery cables.
